The first appearance by the 5th Ranger Battalion along the Siegfried Line during the morning hours was not deemed a threat by German defenders. As the men of Company ‘A’ came out of the forest, the first German West Wall pillbox was sighted. At first thought to be deserted, 19 Germans, laughing and shoving sausage down their throats as they looked up, thinking the Americans were friendlies, in enemy uniforms. Into the bag these happy landsers went. With them went the element of surprise and a battle erupted against a line of pillboxes, all facing south-east, the expected avenue of attack. The Rangers held the lucky card: the facing of the pillboxes allowed them to attack along an oblique frontage with many taken from behind. By sun down the Rangers had put over 100 German prisoners in the bag.
