Immediately after arriving at their Lithuanian battlefield, the soldiers under Rudolf Witzig’s command began to make their presence felt. The day after their arrival a deep raid was conducted into the rear of the 870th Infantry Regiment of the 277th Rifle Division. The attack came on the Regiment’s headquarters unexpectedly. This is what the deputy commander of this regiment, G. Dubrovskis, remembers: “... on 18 July, the Germans succeeded in encircling our regiment's headquarters ...”
