The collapse of Army Group Center left a number of large gaps in German lines in the east. It was into these that the mechanized units of the Red Army poured. STAVKA sought to encircle as many large enemy formations as possible, throwing in all nearby mechanized forces, bringing artillery and infantry power to bear to remove each division from the war. One such encirclement took place near Brody, in the Ukraine, during mid July of 1944. The terrain consisted of numerous rolling hills, farmland and river valleys. The Bug river was a barrier that the Soviets planned to utilize to trap the Germans. The encircled enemy included four under-strength infantry divisions, rear-area soldiers, and one newly formed SS Grenadier Division, the 14th SS Grenadier Division Galicia No. 1. The Galician Ukranians had seen limited action the previous year, as a regimental-sized unit, mainly fighting Partisans in rear areas. Only recently brought up to strength as a division, it was unique in that it was manned, with exception of its commander, and 30% of the officers, by Ukrainians volunteers. Despite a language barrier, and limited training, the Ukranians acted effectively as a rear-guard, and completed their assignment with considerable élan. Many did not make it out of the pocket, only a third of them made it back to German lines. Some may have joined nearby Ukranian UPA formations but most would lay under the soil of Ukraine forever.
