Operation C: Kohima EVERYMAN Edition

GPT spur (aka GPT Hill), to the south of Kohima Ridge, was held by a mixed assortment of Indian, Burmese and Gurkha troops, mostly without their own officers. They had not had a chance to dig in properly before the enemy began engaging them. Following a heavy artillery and mortar barrage the Japanese attacked on 5 April. The defenders were unnerved by the artillery fire. The composite Indian Company defending the right of the ridge abandoned their weapons and fled before the Japanese launched their infantry attack. The remaining defenders fought hard but were eventually driven from their positions.
