As the Allies inched forward along the Bug River, the Russian Army reeled in every direction from the Wehrmacht's onslaught. While the Romanians pushed toward Odessa, reclaiming lost territory, the Hungarian Mobile Corps sped toward Nikolaev. This important city, where the River Ingul flows into the River Bug, was crucial for trapping large Russian formations and destabilizing the rapidly deteriorating Russian southern flank. The Hungarian Mobile Corps attacked toward Novoye Odessa. It was here that an infantry company from the newly deployed Italian Pasubio Division joined the Hungarian 1st Motorized Brigade, ostensibly to bolster its infantry strength. The Italians were eager to join this new crusade to the East. At this stage of the war, all reports spoke of German success. The true horror of the war on the Russian Front would not reveal itself until winter. Northwest of Nikolaev, this combined force attacked the Russians entrenched around the small village of Petrovksoye. As the Hungarians and Italians entered the village, a Russian armored attack began. Light tanks from both sides clashed while infantry from three nations fought fiercely in hand-to-hand combat for control of the trenches and the few buildings. Both sides suffered heavy losses, and the light Hungarian armor held its own against the similarly light Russian tanks. Eventually, the stubborn resistance of the Russian infantry and the superior armament of the Russian tanks forced the Hungarians and Italians to withdraw to their original starting position at the neighboring village of Sulzhoy Yelenets. The surviving Italians would eventually rejoin their parent division, still marching east on foot.
