The remnants of the 29th SS Regiment and the 14th Field Replacement Battalion, acting as rear guards, sat atop Hill 371 waiting for the enemy to make their next move. The hill held a commanding view of the surrounding terrain for many miles, and lay along the main route of escape. To the right flank the hill was covered with woods, making it almost impassable to the Russian tanks. To the left flank lay the Bug River, and large areas of marsh along either side of the river, creating a funnel passing through the hamlet of Podlesie. The Russians attacked first with artillery, then they sent penal battalions, some without weapons, to clear minefields and expose German positions. Charging up the hill the penal battalion soldiers were mowed down by heavy machine-gunfire. The next card played by Russian commanders came in the form of armor and additional infantry, supported by fighter bombers. The Germans fired until their gun barrels glowed red. Well stocked with extra barrels, and copious ammunition, the defenders managed to hold out for another day. The time they bought allowed more of their kameraden to escape to the south.

Some might say the peak of the epic struggle between east and west, before the Red Army reached the borders of the Third Reich, took place across the Ukraine during the year 1944, with things reaching the boiling point during July of that year. Whatever your take on where the clash struck head on, before one side began giving way, the most potent AFVs and other technologies met while there was still elite, motivated manpower on hand for both sides and the result is a study of terrain, and a comparison of weapons systems that only tactical-level sims can offer.
