The wheatfield, Gettysburg, 2 July 1863: As Zook's and Kelly's Brigades were engaged at the Stony Hill, Col. Edward Cross' brigade was on the left, attacking through the Wheatfield towards Anderson's Brigade behind the Stone Wall between the Wheatfield and the Rose Woods. As Col. Cross advanced through the Wheatfield, fire from Anderson's caused Cross to order his brigade to stop and return fire. Cross's brigade was taking heavy casualties in the Wheatfield, so he decided to order a charge against the stone wall. At this point, Cross was mortally wounded. Nevertheless, the charge went forward. The brigade approached the wall on a diagonal, hitting Anderson's right side of the line. The 5th New Hampshire and part of the 148th Pennsylvania began rolling up Andersons regiments, which began to withdraw back into the woods. Cross' Brigade halted its advance, with its left regiment anchored on the stone wall, and the right regiments still in the middle of the Wheatfield. The brigade held this position for about a half hour, but the right three regiments had run dangerously low of ammunition. BG Caldwell ordered his 4th Brigade, commanded by Col.. Edward Brooke to replace Cross' brigade in the Wheatfield. Cross' two leftmost regiments, the 5th New Hampshire, and the 148th Pennsylvania remained at the east end of the wall and in the Wheatfield, firing on Anderson's line. Brooke's Brigade advanced quickly, stopping about halfway across the Wheatfield to open fire on Anderson's line. After about 5 minutes, Brooke ordered his men to fix bayonets. Col. Brooke then tried to get his brigade moving forward, but the din of battle was so loud that could not be heard. Grabbing the 53rd Pennsylvania's colors, Col. Brooke moved forward, and his brigade began to follow, driving the remainder of Anderson's men away from the stone wall and through the Rose Woods.
