La Breche d’Hermanville, FRANCE, 6 June 1944: “A” Company of 1st South Lancashire’s was to land on the right quarter of Sword Beach and secure the beachhead to allow engineers to clear two paths from the sea to the lateral road behind La Breche. The assault and clearing force consisted of some 200 men supported by over thirty tanks and other AFVs; roughly one tank every ten yards. Intelligence indicated there were few defenders confronting the South Lancs, but they would need to be wary of flanking fire and artillery firing from inland. The British landed into relatively light direct fire, they were however subjected to fire from German guns firing from inland and probably to flanking fire from WN 21, “Trout”. “A” Company’s Commanding Officer Major Harwood and his subordinate were both killed on the beach.
