By early 1943, the Axis forces in Tunisia were under increasing pressure from the advancing British First Army and U.S. forces following the Battle of Kasserine Pass. In response, the German 5th Panzer Army, under General Jürgen von Arnim, launched Operation Ochsenkopf, an offensive designed to disrupt Allied positions and regain the initiative. One of the key thrusts of this operation was directed at Sidi Nsir, a small but strategically important village located northeast of Béja. The village was held by the 5th Hampshire Battalion, which had been positioned there to delay any Axis advance toward the main British defensive line at Hunt’s Gap.
