West-of EL ALAMEIN, EGYPT, 9 July 1942: In the early days of July 1942, as the desert winds swept across the Alamein line, General Leslie Morshead—commanding the 9th Australian Division—met with Generals Ramsden and Pienaar to finalize a plan that would test the mettle of his troops and the resolve of Rommel’s Panzerarmee Afrika. On July 9, Morshead issued orders for a coordinated assault to begin the following morning. The objective: seize and hold the Tel el Eisa ridge and surrounding features, including Trig 33 and Points 23 and 26.
The plan was bold. The 26th Brigade, under Brigadier David Whitehead, would lead the attack. Lieutenant Colonel H. H. Hammer’s 2/48th Battalion was tasked with capturing Point 26, then pushing forward to the Point 23 saddle. Meanwhile, Lieutenant Colonel Allan Spowers’ 2/24th Battalion, supported by tanks from the 8th Royal Tank Regiment, would swing in from the right, cross the dunes, and take Trig 33.
