TOBRUK, LIBYA, 30 April 1941: After Rommels failure to seize Tobruk during the Easter Battles of April, the German High Command sent an emissary to try and talk sense into Rommel. No less a personage that General Friedrich von Paulus arrived at the HQ of the Desert Fox on 27 April. His remit, to communicate the chances of a successful defensive posture in the event Sollum was lost was put to rest tout de suite, as von Paulus learned of Rommels plans for a renewed assault on Tobruk planned for 30 April. The conservative future POW of Stalingrad refused to sign off on the attack until he could review the planand after two days relented, and sanctioned the attack. The strike against the strengthened Tobruk Perimeter would be aimed against the southwest line, opposite the defences on each side of the small rise, outside the perimeter, known as Ras el Medauar. A natural strongpoint, it had been heavily fortified by the Australians after their capture of the position earlier in April.
