The EL ADEM box, Gazala Line, LIBYA, 27 May 1942: On 27 May 1942, as part of a bold maneuver to unhinge the Commonwealth defenses, Rommel personally directed the flanking move that would bring the Axis strike force to the outskirts of the El Adem box. Early that morning, Panzerarmee Afrikacomposed of the Afrika Korps, the Italian XX Motorized Corps, and 90th Light Afrika Divisionbegan their southern sweep around the British Gazala Line. By mid-afternoon, elements of 90th Light reached the fortified perimeter of El Adem, defended by the 29th Indian Infantry Brigade and the 2nd South African Division. The position was heavily protected by trenches, barbed wire, and minefields, and a direct assault without engineering support would be costly. Still, Rommel pressed for an immediate attack. As German infantry advanced under cover of dust and dive-bombing Stukas, confusion reigned. Anti-aircraft fire and obscured visibility blunted the aerial support, but the ground assault pressed on.
