El Mreir Depression, EL AMAMEIN, EGYPT, 22 July 1942: The survivors of the New Zealand Division broke out of Minqar Qiam in late June and managed to fall back to the Alamein Line. There would be no respite, as what would come to be known as the First Battle of Alamein would almost immediately commence. Undaunted, the Kiwis conducted night attacks and seized their objectives: Ruweisat Ridge on 15 July 1942, and the El Mreir Depression a week later. There would be no time to rest, let alone exult. When the inevitable riposte was launched, the New Zealanders found themselves critically short of support. An inability to get anti-tank and other heavy weapons forward to the New Zealanders contributed to the debacle El Mreir. The same could be said for the fate of Ruweisat Ridge. Indecision, faulty orders and a lack of initiative by their generals resulted in an absence of British armor, which failed to move forward due also to overall exhaustion. The resulting engagement left little choice on the part of the New Zealanders, left forward. when German tanks appeared they had no choice but to wave the white flags. The 4th, 5th and 6th New Zealand Brigades suffered heavy casualties, and several thousand more Kiwis went into Rommel's prisoner pens. THIS IS THE NEW ATS Classic DAK: 1st Alamein -- the largest desert-themed module every published for ATS. It takes a BIG CHUNK out of the goal of mapping from the Med to the Qattara Depression - with the area between Deir el Shein south to Deir el Merier to Alam el Dihmaniya. Using our Modular Mapping approach, you can lay out the entire battlefield OR just use one or two maps to play different scenarios - all options open. Rommel's forces exceedied orders and pushed into Egypt after the Desert Fox's victory at Gazala ... however while breaking his agreement with Kesselring and Mussolini -- to allow the seizure of Malta to take place before heading for the grand prize of Alexandria... and beyond to Cairo ... When he reached the still open field of battle between the Qattara Depression and the rail station at El Alamein ... Rommel had the equivalent of a large wargame scenario on hand ... making the thought of depicting the battle within the parameters of the tactical-level genre.
