Chipyong-ni, South Korea, 13 February 1951: As night fell on what would be the first night of Chinese attacks, the U.S. and allied soldiers watched Chinese flares being fired above the hills all around Chipyong-ni. This meant the Chinese were forming up for the attack. At 2200 hours mortar fire fell across the perimeter. At 2215 hours, in front of E Company, bugles and whistle sounded and the Chinese attacked. The Battle of Chipyong-ni had begun. Throughout the night the Chinese hit E Company with repeated attacks of small groups coming at the Americans screaming “Manzai!” a battle cry the Chinese adopted from the North Koreans. The E Company soldiers mowed down the Chinese as they hit the wire and were illuminated by trip flares. Although easily repulsed, these attacks were merely probes, the worst was yet to come.
