By April 20, 1961, the Bay of Pigs invasion had collapsed. Brigade 2506 forces, cut off and surrounded, faced annihilation or capture. In the chaos, small groups attempted to escape through the surrounding swamplands—dense, mosquito-infested terrain that offered concealment but little comfort. Cuban militia units, aided by local guides and patrol boats, began sweeping the area, using dogs and loudspeakers to flush out fugitives. The exiles, many wounded and low on supplies, moved cautiously through the muck, avoiding open ground and relying on rudimentary maps. Skirmishes erupted as Cuban patrols intercepted escapees, leading to desperate firefights in waist-deep water and mangrove thickets. Some Brigade fighters managed to evade capture and reach extraction points, while others were hunted down or surrendered. The swamp became a grim theater of survival, where terrain and exhaustion were as deadly as bullets. The Cuban government’s control of the area and rapid deployment of search teams ensured that few would escape. The episode highlighted the invasion’s final unraveling: a once-coordinated operation reduced to scattered, desperate flight.
