By the 25th of May, the world already knew the outcome of the Battle of France. The Belgian role at this point was to continue to resist, prolonging the battle in order that British and French troops could escape. These efforts would soon bring the war to the tiny village of Vinckt (also spelled “Vynckt” in the past and “Vinkt”), a place with about 1200 inhabitants. And Vinckt had the unfortunate fate of being situated just east of the canal Schipdonk. The generals of the Belgian High Command made a decision that would seal the fate of tiny Vinckt: keep the bridge over the Schipdonk up to allow as many British stragglers to retreat in the face of the Wehrmacht; and to aid civilian refugees fleeing in the face of the oncoming enemy.
