SOUTHERN UKRAINE, 20 August 1944: As the Soviet advance pressed deeper into Eastern Europe, the conflict in southern Ukraine intensified, with the 4th Ukrainian Front aiming to break through Hungarian defensive positions near the border. Soviet forces, including the battle-hardened 1st Guards Army, faced stiff resistance from the 1st Hungarian Army, which had recently received reinforcements equipped with advanced Hungarian-built tanks. Despite sustaining heavy losses, the Hungarians sought to prevent further Soviet breakthroughs and hold their defensive line against overwhelming pressure.
Throughout mid-August, the two armies clashed repeatedly, with Soviet forces steadily pushing forward. The Hungarian defenders, though resilient, struggled to halt the momentum of the advancing Soviet columns. In a last-ditch effort to shift the tide, Hungarian commanders launched a determined counterattack near the border, committing their best armored units and infantry formations to the assault. The Soviet response was swift—without their most powerful armored forces available, the 1st Guards Army relied on lightly armored self-propelled guns and concentrated artillery fire to blunt the Hungarian advance.
As the engagement unfolded, the sheer determination of Hungarian troops initially enabled them to force the Soviets to cede ground. However, the cost of this tactical success proved disastrous. Soviet defenses, though strained, exacted a significant toll on their attackers, and Hungarian forces suffered catastrophic losses in the brutal fighting. Nearly half of their available tank force was destroyed, and one-quarter of their infantry was lost in the engagement. Despite brief success on the battlefield, the Hungarian 2nd Armored Division had been effectively crippled.
