DJEBEL TAHENT, TUNISIA, 28 April 1943:
Hill 531 served as a sentinel, situated along the approach to 609 and blocking all approaches to the latter. Worse, 531 was in turn covered from the northeast by smaller, but equally rugged hills. On 28 April the focus of Companies āAā and āCā, 1st Battalion, would be the capture of Hill 531. Support from 81mm mortars and heavy machine-guns were laid in and despite the expenditure of copious quantities of ammunition, and several unsuccessful attempts, Hill 531 remained in German hands. During the night of 28 April the 1st Battalion received orders to make a night attack on Hill 531. After the unsuccessful push on the 28th, things only got worse as practically no progress was made against stiff German opposition.
