The sky above was overcast. The bursting shells ahead left a lingering pall of smoke in the damp, still air. German observers to the east around Carpiquet airfield likewise had no clear view of the advance, but nor did they need any. It was sufficient for them to drop shells and mortar bombs directly behind the long line of the barrage. All along the British line of advance the defensive fire took its effect, but nowhere worse than the extreme left of the line, closest to Carpiquet, adding to the losses of the Fusiliers’ B Company. Still their sections plodded on, walking upright over open fields bereft of cover, over a slight rise then down a shallow slope into the valley. And at last, as the foremost sections reached the narrow trickle of the Mue rivulet, the defending infantry were encountered.
