Amidst the advancing twilight of 17 September, the 7th Battalion Somerset Light Infantry embarked on their planned eastward thrust, aiming to secure a critical crossroads southwest of Elst. To the right (south) of the Worcesters, C Company rapidly overpowered initial enemy resistance, then stepped back as D Company, supported by A Squadron of the 4/7th Royal Dragoon Guards, took the lead. They pressed onward to the junction with the main Nijmegen-Arnhem highway. With daylight yielding to night, they achieved their objective, capturing ten Germans. The encroaching darkness favored the defenders, causing the British advance to pause at the outskirts of Elst. Orders from the commanding officer directed the battalion to hold their newly gained ground. Consequently, C and D Companies dug in on either side of the road within the village, while A Company established a defensive position in an orchard. The machine-gunners of the 8th Battalion, Middlesex Regiment, along with Battalion HQ personnel, secured the exposed terrain to the north. As the officers convened to strategize the next day's assault on Elst, the Red Devils to the north endured another night within the Oosterbeek Perimeter.
This is the ELST battlefield, newly remastered in 2025 Everyman map palette, scenario layout and more.
