After Chinese forces entered Korea in November 1950, UN forces retreated behind the 38th parallel. In this uncertain climate, Lt. General Matthew B. Ridgway decided to make a stand at Chipyong-ni and Wonju, recognizing that Chinese supply lines were overstretched.
The 23rd Regimental Combat Team (RCT), commanded by Paul L. Freeman Jr., reached Chipyong-ni on 3 February and began setting up a perimeter defense. They were reinforced by artillery, tank, and engineer elements.
On the night of 13 February, the 23rd RCT, including US and French units, faced off against units of the Chinese People's Volunteer Army (PVA) around the village of Chipyong-ni. Despite being outnumbered, the UN forces held their ground against repeated Chinese assaults¹.
The battle ended in a United Nations victory, with the UN forces successfully repelling the Chinese attacks. This engagement, along with the Third Battle of Wonju, has been called “the Gettysburg of the Korean War” due to its strategic significance in halting the momentum of the Chinese offensive.
U.N. casualties totaled 404, including 52 KIA. Chinese casualties were significantly higher, with at least 5,000 casualties reported. The Battle of Chipyong-ni was a pivotal moment in the Korean War, showcasing the resilience of United Nations forces and marking a turning point in the conflict.
