The Battle of Bunker Hill, fought on June 17, 1775, was the first major pitched engagement of the American Revolutionary War and a defining moment in the early struggle between the Massachusetts Provincial Army and British regular forces occupying Boston. Although commonly associated with Bunker Hill, most of the fighting occurred on nearby Breed’s Hill, a lower rise closer to Boston Harbor. The battle emerged from the strategic stalemate that followed the clashes at Lexington and Concord in April, when colonial militia surrounded Boston and effectively trapped the British garrison inside the town. General Thomas Gage, the British commander, sought to break the encirclement by seizing the heights surrounding the city, which would allow his artillery to dominate the rebel positions and reopen secure lines of communication.
