The German defenses in Bréville presented a severe threat to the 6th Airborne Division as they risked the security of the entire bridgehead. After securing a foothold on the heights between Bréville and Hérouvillette, the Anglo-Canadian paratroopers of the 3 Para Brigade faced staunch resistance from the entrenched Germans. Despite the arrival of the 6th Airlanding Brigade as reinforcements by gliders on D-Day evening, the British decided to focus on the Bréville salient on the night of June 6-7. The 9th Parachute Battalion was ordered to capture Bréville, Château Saint-Côme, and Bois des Monts to control the commanding plateau. Initiating their operations at 1:30 am, the paratroopers established combat positions on the outskirts.
The morning on June 7 saw No. 6 Commando, commanded by Lieutenant-Colonel Derek Mills-Roberts, launching an assault on Bréville and capturing several prisoners and artillery pieces, only to retreat later and allow the Germans to reoccupy the village. Reinforcements from the 346th Infantry Division, particularly Grenadier-Regiment 857, fortified the area. Over the following days, the paratroopers faced continuous German attacks, with Grenadier-Regiment 857 leading coordinated offensives on June 9, supported by heavy artillery.
