Welcome to ATS Great War 7: AIF AT WARTM. This seventh Great War module for CH’s ATS System introduces Australian combatants during World War I.

The qualities displayed by the Australians in the Great War have been lauded by many a historian. Some point to the enthusiasm of the young democracy. Others speak to the physical hardiness of a nation literally carved from the brush and harsh terrain. And yet others point out that each and every soldier of the Commonwealth was a pioneer or the son of a pioneer, of strong stock. No matter if their comradeship and daring were the results of physical, or brotherly traits, the “Digger” was a valued soldier. And a marked man. The magnitude of Australia’s contributuon can be measured, too, to some extent using numbers. Less than 75 years before the Great War there were less than half a million people in the country. In 1914, of a population of about five million, 420,600 enlisted. No less than 57,800 were KIA; another 150,000 WIA. The Australian casualty rolls only listed 4,064 POW and MIA. Every Digger had to travel 12,000 miles to reach the Western Front. And while the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) was initially led by British officers, as the War continued, leadership was taken over by battle-proven young Australians. After the withdrawal from Gallipoli, the Diggers were inserted into the hell of the trenches on the Western Front.
