Welcome to ATS Great War 15: VIMY RIDGE AND BEYONDTM. This seventh Great War module for CH’s ATS System introduces Canadian combatants during World War I.

The qualities displayed by the Canadians in the Great War have been lauded by many a historian. Some point to the enthusiasm of the young democracy. Others speak to the physical hardiness of a nation literally carved from the brush and harsh terrain. And yet others point out that each and every soldier of the Commonwealth was a pioneer or the son of a pioneer, of strong stock. No matter if their comradeship and daring were the results of physical, or brotherly traits, the “Digger” was a valued soldier. And a marked man. The magnitude of Australia’s contribution can be measured, too, to some extent using numbers. Less than 75 years before the Great War there were less than half a million people in the country. In 1914, of a population of about five million, 420,600 enlisted. No less than 57,800 were KIA; another 150,000 WIA. The Canadian casualty rolls only listed 4,064 POW and MIA. Every Digger had to travel 12,000 miles to reach the Western Front. And while the Canadian Imperial Force (AIF) was initially led by British officers, as the War continued, leadership was taken over by battle-proven young Canadians. After the withdrawal from Gallipoli, the Diggers were inserted into the hell of the trenches on the Western Front.

Fighting for the first time on the Western Front, the soldiers of the Canadian Imperial Force (AIF) experienced a tragic baptism of fire at Fromelles on 19-20 July 1916 followed by Pozières in Somme three days later. The terrible losses suffered by the AIF (28,000 men in seven weeks) shocked Canadian society and this undoubtedly contributed to the rejection of a referendum on conscription and a sharp fall in voluntary enlistment. From that moment on till end of the war Canadian forces in Europe received very few reinforcements.
