Santa Maria Infante - The Road to Rome
Experience the raw struggle of
inexperienced Americans against the dug-in strength of the German Army in
Italy, 1944:
Corporal Tyler climbed over the concertina
wire, then yelled back to Sergeant Pyenta, "The road's up here!" The words
were scarcely out of his mouth before bursts of machine-gun fire silenced
him and mowed down the rest of his squad...
And:
While the western
position was under attack, Colonel Kendall led a small command group and a
handful of men from the 2d and 4th Platoons against a machine-gun
emplacement in house No. 9. Advancing from the sunken road where he left
the bulk of Company E, the battalion commander moved up the forward slope
of The Spur, urging his men forward by injunction and example.
Before rushing the
machine-gun nest, Kendall built up his squad fire power and himself shot
every weapon he could lay his hands on. Grabbing a BAR from a soldier who
was not using it, Colonel Kendall emptied it at the machine-gun
emplacement in the house. He then successively fired a carbine until he
had used up all its ammunition, an M-1 rifle, and antitank rifle grenades.
After that he seized a bazooka and directed three rounds at the pillbox.
The first two shots sailed over the target, but the third struck it
squarely.
